Myth
THE MYTH OF EUROPE
Europe was the daughter of king Agenor and queen Telephassa, of the Phoenician city of Tyre (now Lebanon). Europe was a very beautiful princess. She had four brothers: Cilix, Thausus, Phoenix and Cadmus.
Zeus, the king of Gods, once saw her on the seashore and was so captivated by her beauty and charms that he fell in love with her. He decided to transform into a white bull and approached her. The bull looked wonderful with its snow-white body and gem-like horns. He was so pretty and gentle that all women at the shore liked him. But the bull bent in front of Europe offering her his back to ride. Europe looked at the extraordinary creature curiously and sat on his back. |
The bull took her across the sea to the island of Crete and he showed his real identity to Europe. Zeus loved her so much that he gave her three priceless gifts. The first one was a bronze man, Talos, who was a guard to protect her. The second gift was a dog, Laelaps, which could hunt anything she wanted. The last gift was a javelin that had the power to hit any target.
When Europe disappeared on the back of the bull, her father Agenor sent Europe’s brothers to look for her ordering them not to come back without her. The brothers went in different directions.
Cilix, the eldest brother, looked for a long time with no success. He ended up in Turkey and became the king of Cicilia (now Tarsus). Thasus landed on the island of Thassos and he reigned there. Phoenix went to Africa. And Cadmus, the youngest and most beloved brother of Europe, asked the Oracle of Delphi what to do. The priests of the Oracle told him not to worry about his sister because she was safe. They also told him to go to the north of Athens and found a town named Cadmia (now Thebes) which would become rich and powerful.
Europe and Zeus had three children: Minos, Rhadamanthys and Sarpedon. They were fair men and became the judges of the Underworld. The first son, Minos, became the king of Knossos, a city in Crete.
When Europe died, Zeus transformed her and himself into the Taurus constellation.
Nowadays, this myth is represented in the Greek coin of two euros.
